Re-wilding our Creek

“The Wilding” was a beautiful project created for local residents during lockdown, subsequently extended and enhanced by work and support from Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek, Merri-bek City Council, and Melbourne Water.

Young trees and plants in a garden on a slope, with protective blue covers on some of the plants and rocks along the ground.

In the depths of lockdown, as restrictions increased, we needed a source of hope.

Following the lead of local nature-loving superheroes, Zoe and Hugh, we found a neglected patch along Moonee Ponds Creek. This became our patch of beloved earth.

Starting small, we began clearing grass and weeds. Passers by stopped to say hello and find out what was happening. A wonderful neighbour, Hilary, stopped on her daily walk. Could she help? Absolutely! More progress, more passersby, more people invited to join us. A group of earth lovers were coming together.

“The Wilding” was alive.

Almost daily, we popped down to the creek for some weeding, or taming of the old Fig Tree. The patch also became a natural play space for our very active boys. It was time to get amongst some planting.

Eucalyptus trees left over from a planting at Brunswick North West Primary School were donated to our patch. We bought a few of our favourite hardy natives and tucked them in too.

It was time to step up the love.

Plant dedications were gathered from local families. With each dedication, tubestocks were purchased. Dedications were written on the plant guards for each new tubestock. Families were invited to plant their tubestocks. Staggered, socially-spaced planting days followed.

The Wilding grew wilder.

In 2024, the Wilding became part of a bigger restoration project. Championed by passionate local residents, Laurel Frank and Zoe Jellie, Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek were awarded a state Green Links grant. Supported by Merri-Bek Council, and Melbourne Water, major works had lift-off. New work extended along the embankment, from Turnbull Court to the City Link overpass. Weedy trees were removed, and grass/weeds sprayed. The site was clear and ready for more life to be added.

July 2025: ready for magic.

Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek, Merri-Bek Council, and Melbourne Water held the first official Community Planting Day. Over 400 tubestocks were planted by Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek and local residents.

Our Wilding became connected. And our creek took a big step towards wild beauty.
